In the early 1930's the Gold Dredge needed clean water for its sluicing, and so a dam was built at Kangaroo Crossing. The purpose was to raise the creek level, and run the water all the way back to ElDorado on raised water races. Even though both the water races and the dam were completed, they were never used.

During this time, the dredge processed around 30 million cubic metres of river bed, obtaining over 70,000 ounces of gold and 1,383 tons of tin concentrate!

Eldorado was named after the legend of El Dorado in 1840 by William Baker, the name he used for his run. Even though the name refers to a land abounding in gold there was no gold found in Eldorado until the 1850s when it became a thriving gold rush town. Eldorado Post Office opened on 1 August 1861. The town's population declined sharply after the area ceased to yield gold.
